Late on Monday we reported that Katsunari Takayama (30-7-0-1, 12) would likely be defending his IBF Minimumweight title on New Year's Eve against Mexico's Jose Argumedo (13-5-1, 9). We were essentially tipped off by a ticket seller for the Ioka card that day which listed the bout, but hadn't heard any official word.
Today we can actually confirm the bout which was officially announced earlier today in a press conference that featured both Takayama and his mentor Hiroaki Nakade.
The press conference seemed to suggest that Takayama sees the bout as a bit of a foregone conclusion with lots of talk about next year, including suggestion that he would be looking at unification bouts with either WBO champion Kosei Tanaka or WBA champion Hekkie Budler, as well a mention of a move up to Light Flyweight.
Whilst much of the press conference was focused on the future Takayama also said that he was honoured to be fighting on a New Years Eve show, his second in a row. It was also noted that Argumedo would be the under-dog but would be coming to win rather than just making up the numbers against the reigning champion.
