Former OPBF Bantamweight champion Rolly Lunas (34-9-1, 20) will make his ring return on May 7th as he returns to a US ring and takes on the unbeaten and very promising Manuel Avila (16-0, 7) in a must win contest for the Filipino fighter.
Lunas was last seen in the ring in November 2013 when he was stopped in 3 rounds by recent world title challenger Chris Avalos. The loss to Avalos was Lunas's first defeat since a 2009 reversal to Hiromasa Ohashi and it seemed to spell a possible end for the well liked fighter.
Although a Filipino Lunas was based in Japan for several years, where he fought under the moniker "Rolly Matsushita". It was in Japan that Lunas scored a number of his most notable wins including a technical decision over Malcolm Tunacao and stoppages over Jerope Mercado, Kohei Oba and Ryuichi Funai.
In recent times the Filipino has been less than active with just just 11 rounds of action in the last 2 years, with 3 of those being in the defeat to Avalos and the other 8 coming in his decision win over tough Mexican veteran German Meraz.
Avila on the other hand has been very active with 3 fights last year, including a very notable second round KO against David De La Mora last May. Aged 22 the American now seems to want another big win on his record before moving onwards and upwards.
For those wanting to watch this bout it will be aired as part of the Golden Boy on Fox Sports shows and will shown live on Fox Sports 1 in the US.
