Chinese fighter Xiong Zhao Zhong (26-6-1, 14) [熊朝忠] was recently honoured in his homeland with a national sports award for the best non-Olympic sports person.
The fighter, who is the current OPBF Minimumweight champion, claimed the award just a few days ago and seemed honoured at the recognition for his career and also seemed to thank those who had selected him for the award.
Zhong, the only Chinese man to win a world title so far, was over-looked a few years ago, when he was a world champion, due to the lack of interest in boxing but over the past few years Zhong, along with Zou Shiming, Ik Yang, Qiu Xiao Jun and Rex Tso have helped China's boxing fan base grow substantially and the award seemed to show just how much things have changed in China's view of the sport.
Interestingly Zhong also stated that he would be taking part in a show on February 11th as part of a Lunar New Year show on CCTV 5. At the moment however the details are unclear on who he will be facing, and whether or not he will be defending his OPBF crown.
