News from the Philippines broke recently reporting that unbeaten Filipino fighter Carl Jammes Martin (15-0, 14) would be returning to the ring on February 22nd to face a genuine test, as he goes up against Renoel Pael (23-11-1, 12).
The all action Martin, dubbed the "Wonder Boy", is 20 years old and has been creating a lot of buzz in the last few years due to his youth, style and power. In all honesty he's probably the most TV friendly fighter in the Philippines, though defensively improvements will need to be made going forward.
In 2019 Martin made his TV debut, stopping Petchchorhae Kokietgym in February, and went on to take out 3 more opponents before the year was over, claiming the PBF Bantamweight title along the way. He has looked good, but his opponents have been relatively limited so far.
On paper Pael looks limited, as most fighters with double digit losses do, however the 29 year old shouldn't be over-looked. He has never been stopped, is a former OPBF title challenger and has shared the ring with a mini who's who. During his 36 fight career Pael has been in with Ardin Diale, Suguru Muranaka, Andrew Moloney, Ryan Lumacad and most recently Tatsuya Takahashi.
Coming in Pael has been racking up losses but has served as an excellent acid test to guys like Moloney and should do the same here for Martin, who needs someone tough to be up against.
We would expect natural size difference to play an issue, with Martin being the much bigger guy, but this will still be a bout where questions are asked about Martin, and that is something we needed to see this year.
