It's only been 2 weeks since IBF Flyweight champion Amnat Ruenroeng (15-0, 5) upset Zou Shiming, and put a halt on the Chinese fighter's rise to the top, but he is already focusing on preparing for his next defence, against Filipino road warrior Johnriel Casimero (21-2, 13).
According to a number of Thai sources it seems that this talks are under-way for Amnat to defend his belt against Casimero in June. The bout, a mandatory defence for Amnat, will be the second mandatory since he won the title in January 2014 and comes around 9 months after he narrowly out pointed McWilliams Arroyo in his first mandatory defense.
The hopes from Amnat's team seems to be to sort out this fight and then look towards unifying the IBF title with one of the other titles later in the year. Of course Casimero will have something to say about that and the Filipino is himself looking to claim the title and help enhance his own reputation which has included a previous reign as the IBF Light Flyweight champion, unfortunately for Casimero that reign came to and end last year when he outgrew the 108lb division.
From what we're hearing it's looking highly likely that the bout will take place in Amnat's native Thailand. It was in Thailand that Amnat won the title, outpointing Casimero's countryman Rocky Fuentes for the vacant title, though impressively Amnat has defended the belt twice away from home with upset wins over both Kazuto Ioka and Shiming.
Although no fighter likes travelling to Thailand we really can't see it bothering Casimero who is a hardened road warrior, who has scored wins in Nicaragua, Mexico, Panama and Argentina. In fact Casimero's top wins have come on the road with his stoppage win over Luis Alberto Lazarte coming in Argentina and his split decision victory over Pedro Guevara coming in Mexico being particular stand outs.
