We haven't seen many upsets at the top level this year but we did see a notable surprise when Thailand's Amnat Ruenroeng proved he was a legitimate world class boxer and out boxed Japanese star Kazuto Ioka, in Ioka's own back yard of Osaka. The two men, who had fought in the amateurs, each had their own agendas going in to this bout. For Ioka, a former Minimumweight and Light Flyweight champion, it was an attempt to become Japan's second ever 3 weight world champion and the quickest ever fighter to achieve the feat. For Amnat it was a chance to prove that he wasn't just a title holder but was a real world class fighter. What we ended up getting was a showcase performance from the Thai who, although lazy at times, looked exceptional in spurts when he let his hands go and seemingly looked a level above his highly regarded Japanese foe. Sadly for Ioka it wasn't just a good performance from Amnat that inflicted his first loss but also a poor performance from Ioka who seemed to neglect a lot of his best tools tools en route to being out pointed. Since this bout Ioka hasn't fought though we do expect him to announce his return to the ring in the coming weeks. For Amnat his next bout will be on September 10th as he defends his belt against McWilliams Arroyo in a very good looking bout. If Amnat wins that one he is then expected to face Zou Shiming in Macau, in early 2015. (Video courtesy of boxers in Thailand world boxing)
