A potential bout between Takashi Miura (30-3-2, 23) [三浦 隆司] and Orlando Salido (43-13-4-1, 30) has been spoken about for quite some time, but now it appears to be a reality with American promoter Oscar De La Hoya having finalised a deal for the bout between two of the sports most exciting, and consistently fun to watch, fighters. Not only is the bout not finalised week but a lot of details have been revealed.
As reported earlier this week the contest is set for December 17th, confirming the date that we had previously heard being mentioned, and the bout will take place at the Forum in Inglewood, California, a great venue that recently hosted the Carlos Cuadras vs Roman Gonzalez fight and is known for having a really great atmosphere with passionate fans rather than the sterile environment of gamblers in a big Las Vegas casino.
The bout will be for the WBC "interim" Super Featherweight title and the winner will be mandated to fight the champion, currently Francisco Vargas, in 2017. Vargas took that title from Miura, who is wanting revenge, and has defended it against Salido, with a draw earlier this year.
It seems that the bout will be on HBO, as part of their "Boxing after Dark" series, and will be a pre-Christmas treat for boxing fans who are guaranteed a special bout with both men really known less as boxers and more as fighters. The 35 year old Salido has been in consistent top level fights against the likes Juan Manuel Marquez, Juan Manuel Lopez, Vasyl Lomahcneko, Terdsak Kokietgym, Roman Martinez, and Francisco Vargas. In fact his last 4 bouts were all FOTY winners or candidates. Miura hasn't quite had the consistency of top fights of Salido but bouts with Takashi Uchiyama, Sergio Thompson, Dante Jardon and Vargas have proven him to be a top tier operator.
At the moment little is known about the under-card though with Teiken and Golden Boy Working well together there is a chance we could see another Japanese fighter on the card to add further Eastern interest to the show.
