This past weekend fight fans saw a massive upset as Nicaraguan great Roman Gonzalez (46-1, 38) suffered a shock defeat to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (42-4-1, 38) [ศรีสะเกษ นครหลวงโปรโมชั่น], the new WBC Super Flyweight champion.
Today Srisaket returned home to Thailand to recieve a hero's welcome/
He was mobbed at the airport, met with both fans, shows off his title for the media, met dignitories and received a cheque for ฿1,000,000, whilst also having several key meetings announced.
The Thai, who is now world famous among boxing fans, went from a relative unknown in the west to notable name over the weekend. The sort attention has seen him build his reputation further at home and in the next week or so he is set to meet the Thai prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and have a major celebration in Uthumphon Phisai District, which is in the province of Sisaket.
Despite the win occuring on Saturday it seems the mainstream Thai media were waiting for Srisaket to get home before making a big deal out of the win.
