At the beginning of the month we were really excited abut an IBF Bantamweight world title eliminator between talented Japanese fighter Ryosuke Iwasa (18-1, 11) and American fighter Sergio Perales (24-2, 16) in what was supposed to be a final eliminator to decide he next challenger of world champion Randy Caballero. Sadly Perales had to pull out earlier this month after suffering an injury in training.
As a result of Perales's injury we've seen the bout turned into a relatively disappointing bout between Iwasa and Filipino fight Ricardo Roa (12-9-2, 4). Not only have did we see the name of Iwasa's opponent change but we also saw the status of the bout change. It went from an IBF final Eliminator to an insignificant bout agreed at 54.5KG, or just over 120lbs.
On the scales today Iwasa was actually over the Bantamweight limit coming in at 119¾lbs, obviously not cutting down too harshly following the changed status of the bout. As for Roa he was just a smidge over 119lbs.
Whilst the change in the bout is a disappointing one it seems likely that the whole training camp won't be for naught and there are apparently talk between Celes Gym representatives and the IBF to get Iwasa a mandatory shot at Randy Caballero following Perales's pull out of the eliminator.
