Yesterday we reported that Filipino fighter Renan Trongco (16-4, 9) was set to get an IBF Light Flyweight world title fight against the heavy handed Javier Mendoza (22-2-1, 18). Unfortunately we were wrong and Trongco will not be getting that title fight on January 10th. Sadly it's a double whammy of sorts for Filipino fans as Mendoza will instead be defending his belt against Colombian fighter Mauricio Fuentes (17-3, 11), a man who was stopped inside a round by former champion John Riel Casimero last May.
It's not all bad news however for Filipino fans and from what we understand Mendoza will be back in action in on March 28th to defend his title against mandatory challenger Milan Melindo (32-1, 12), if he gets past Fuentes as easily as expected. At thew moment the camps from ALA, who promote Melindo, and Zanfer, who promote Mendoza, are in talks with ALA trying to get the fight in the Philippines to give their man home advantage.
Melindo is the mandatory for Mendoza, having beaten Saul Jaurez in a final eliminator late last year, and a fight against Mendoza will be his second world title bout after having previously come up short against the excellent Juan Francisco Estrada.
