We all like the "super fights" that we get every blue moon, the type of fight that transcends the hardcore fans and sees the sport getting mainstream attention. Whilst those super fights are the chance to let the "outsiders" in to our sport, we also love the fights that are low level action fights. The type of bouts that lack the big names but make up for that with two fighters who simply go out there to have a fight and give us some thrills.
Today saw one of those types of bouts being announced.
The bout in question will see Japanese ranked Flyweight Katsunori Nagamine (12-1, 8) [長嶺 克則] take on Mako Matsuyama (8-10-2, 3) [松山 真虎] in a bout that really could be an all action war.
Of the two men Matsuyama may be the more famous, he was engaged in a 2014 FOTY contender against Hong Kong's Rex Tso in Macao, a bout that saw Tso Matsuyama put his name on the international boxing map, despite suffering an 8th round loss to Tso. The bout was one of the standout contests from Top Rank's foray into the region and is well worth watching again if you've not seen the bout recently. Although his record isn't great he's gutsy, brave, exciting and fights to win, rarely taking a backwards step in the process.
Nagamine, the 2012 Rookie of the Year at Flyweight, has suffered with eye issues in the past but that doesn't seem to have stopped his warrior instincts from kicking in and his bout earlier this year with Kenya Yamashita was enthralling from the opening moments. Whilst much of that was due to Yamashita, who set an incredible pace, Nagamine's own mentality to fight back was evident and if Matsuyama looks to set the pace we'd expect a similarly fun, but short, fight here.
At the moment other details from the card haven't been released but, as hardcore fans, this is a mouth watering match up.
