We will see IBF Minimumweight champion Katsunari Takayama (30-7-0-1, 12) return to the ring on December 31st as he defends his title against Mexican fighter Jose Argumedo (15-3-1, 9).
As part of his preparation for the bout the "Lightning Kid" has been training with the established Kinki University boxing team, who have helped him prepare for a number of recent bouts.
The sparring hasn't the toughest but has high quality and it's allowing Takayama to prepare his gampelan, test his stamina and work on various facets of his game ahead of the bout. Those who saw the sessions has said that the champion has looked sharp, with every punch looking smooth, his left hook looking potent and his straight rank hand apparently looking like it had more snap than it has in the past.
Interestingly this is stark contrast to the training he had for his last bout, where his sessions with the Kinki team were said to have been laboured and clumsy. Although he seemed ill prepared for that bout, he did manage to shine, stopping Ryuji Hara in 8 rounds back on September 27th.
