Earlier today fight fans at the Korakuen Hall saw former world title challenger Jetro Pabustan (29-4-6, 9) claim the WBO Asia Pacific Bantamweight title, as he took a 7th round technical decision over Japanese warrior Tatsuya Takahashi (26-7-5, 19) [高橋 竜也].
On paper the bout looked brilliant, but there was always a risk that the bout would see a premature ending, with Pabustan having had 12 previous technical decisions, including wins, draws and losses. Sadly that 13 became 13 courtesy of a nasty cut over the right eye.
The bout started excitingly, with both men letting their hands go, though it seemed like Pabustan was tougher and stronger than the taller Takahashi, taking shots well and firing back with heavier lookign shots himself. In round 2 Takahashi suffered a cut on the left eye from a clash of heads, before suffering a really bad one on the right eye in round 4, also from a clash of heads.
Between the head clashes there had been really exciting action, and their was afterwards, but in the end the bout was painful to watch with Takahashi's eye a total mess. After the third inspection the doctor was forced to say enough was enough, and stopped the bout taking the to the scorecards early.
Those cards were round out as 67-67, 67-66 and 67-65 in favour of the Filipino who claimed one of the biggest wins of his career, potentially helping him move towards a second world title bout. Sadly for Takahashi this was a second loss at title level and it's likely he'll have to wait a long time for a third shot.
