It was announced recently that IBF have declared a final eliminator for their Super Bantamweight title. The bout, between the #4 ranked Chris Avalos (23-2, 17) and #5 ranked Rey Vargas (18-0, 15), has yet been scheduled though it will see the winner jumping to the #1 position in the IBF rankings.
The bout, which saw Top Rank winning the purse bids with a big of $25,000, a major one for Asian fans despite no Asian fighter being directly involved in the contest.
Firstly the winner of this eliminator will be fighting the winner of Kiko Martinez (30-4, 22) against Hozumi Hasegawa (33-4, 15). If Hasegawa, pictured, wins then the eliminator becomes a major bout for us with Hasegawa then having his first defense lined up.
Regardless of the Hasegawa/Martinez result the eliminator does effect Asian boxing. The winner of Avalos/Vargas would leap frog Japan's Hidenori Otake (21-1-3, 9), who is currently in the #3 ranking position. As a result Otake would have to wait until the mandatory obligations were met before being eligible for an IBF world title fight himself.
No matter how these bouts both go it's fair to say that the Super Bantamweight division is set to heat up with numerous bouts being being made in the last few days. It may not be one of the deepest divisions but it's certainly one loaded with potential match ups that we like the loook of.
