Earlier today at the Shinse Gym in Kobe fans had the opportunity to see Hozumi Hasegawa (33-5, 15) take part in an opening training session ahead of his May 9th bout with unbeaten Mexican puncher Horacio Garcia (29-0, 21).
The session was planned to include an 8 round spar between Hasegawa and Filipino prospect Daryl Basadre (14-1-1, 10). Sadly however that got curtailed part way through with Hasegawa suffering discomfort in his right ankle.
The issue, said to be "minor", saw Hasegawa later having his ankle wrapped and placed in ice rather than going to hospital. The hope is that he will get back to training in a couple of days with no need to go to the hospital.
The bout with Garcia is set to be Hasegawa's first bout since he was stopped by Kiko Martinez last year. The "Ace of Japan", now 34, was expected to retire after that loss but has insisted that he still has more to achieve in the sport, sadly however this injury seems to be a sign that his body isn't as youthful as it had been in his pomp and retirement is looming, even if he manages to upset Garcia.
