The icon Hasegawa, who is a multi-time Japanese boxing MVP, has been given the ranking following his excellent win over Horacio Garcia back on May 5th. It was Hasegawa's first bout in more than a year and it seems clear that the rest did him some good with the talented southpaw looking like a refreshed fighter.
The break from the ring saw Hasegawa being removed from the rankings about 6 months ago but the victory over Garcia convinced the JBC to re-rank him.
The ranking would, in theory, make him the top contender for Japanese champion Satoshi Hosono (27-2-1, 20) and whilst we're not expecting that bout we really wouldn't mind seeing it as it could well be the sort of test either men would enjoy before a potential world title shot later this year or early next year.
