Former 2-weight world champion Takahiro Ao (26-3-1, 12) scored an unsurprising victory earlier on today as he over-came Mexican foe Marco Lopez (23-4, 14) in a 10 round bout fought at 137.5lbs.
Although he scored the victory Ao didn't look like a man who really even near his best and was forced to struggle with Lopez at times in a bout that saw some very diverging scores. One judge saw the contest a near shut out for Ao scoring it a very wide 99-91 though we've been lead to believe that the score card of 98-94 was closer and in fact the card of 96-95 was the most reflective of how poor Ao looked.
With dreams of becoming a 3-weight world champion Ao will need to perform better than this to have any chance with any of the current champions. There isn't one out there that he would beat on this type of form which was disappointing to say the least. Then again it could well have been a case of fighting down to the level of his opponent, something we have seen Ao do in the past, much to our frustration.
