Yesterday we reported that a deal had been reached regarding a WBO Minimumweight title fight between the unbeaten and fast rising Japanese teenager Kosei Tanaka (4-0, 2) and Mexican contender Julian Yedras (24-1, 13) for the two to fight in Aichi in May. Today we're hearing rumours that the date for that bout will be May 30th with a press announcement set day soon.
The bout will see the much touted and highly talented Tanaka attempting to set a Japanese record for fewest fights to a world title, following in the footsteps of fighters such as Naoya Inoue (6 fights) and Kazuto Ioka (7 fights) and several Japanese fighters who have won world titles in their 8th fight.
Aged 19 Tanaka is viewed as the next potential face of Japanese boxing, a role he will likely have to share with the aforementioned Inoue. A win over Yedras will certainly help him claim that position, though some have suggested that his "route to the top" has been easier than that of Inoue or Ioka. In fairness a victory over Yedras isn't as impressive as wins Adrian Hernandez or Oleydong Sithsamerchai, the men beaten by Inoue and Ioka, though his win over Ryuji Hara on his way to the top was certainly as impress as any other win those two had prior to winning a world title. For those interested that win can be seen below.
From what we understand the bout will take place in Nagoya with a venue to be announced shortly.
