Earlier today Kazakh news sources reported that Kazakh amateur boxing great Serik Sapiev [Сапиев Серик] had launched a major sporting initiative in his homeland to help promote sport and physical activity.
As an amateur boxer Sapiev is one of the most decorated fighters ever from Kazakhstan. He won the World Championships in 2005 and 2007, the Asian Games in 2010, the Asian Championships in 2007 and 2009 and, most notably the Olympics in 2012. He has since retired from the sport but remains a major figure in Kazakhstan, working as part of the Committee for Sports and Physical Culture.
The initiative that he's launched, the #AulaFit project, is hoping to link residential complex with professional level sports trainers free of charge to try and promote mass sport and physical activities. The scheme has been launched in two places at the moment, but it appears that the hope is to expand it across the country over the coming years.
The hope is that by 2025 up to 40% of the population within the nation will be engaged in mass sports.
