Earlier today we were sad to learn of the passing of former IBF world title challenger Kwang Koo Park [박광구].
From what we understand the former fighter passed away on March 16th at a hospital in Busan, sadly however other details are scarce with conflicts in regards to his age, with the KBC stating he was 54 and boxrec stating he was 53.
Park fought in Korean boxing heyday of the 1980's though ran up a less than spectacular record of 4-5-1 (1). Whilst his record won't go down in the records books as anything great he was on one of the first men to challenge for the IBF Super Flyweight title, facing the then champion Ju Do Chun in January 1985, in what was just the 6th bout for the title. Sadly for Park he was stopped in the 15th round of that bout.
Notably the bout was Chun's final defense before he faced Elly Pical in what is a very historical bout for Indonesian fans.
Park's final bout came just 5 months after his bout with Chun and saw him suffer a 3rd round TKO loss to the then unbeaten Shunichi Nakajima, who would later fight for the WBA Super Flyweight title.
We would like to send our best wishes to Mr Park and his family.
