Urmat Amankulov and Dong Kwan Lee put on a war for KBC title

Earlier today in Seoul we saw a KBC Featherweight title bout as defending champion Urmat Amankulov (5-1-2, 4) [우르마트.아만크루프] took on Dong Kwan Lee (14-2-2, 6) [이동관] clashed in an entertaining battle on a show promoted by Hannam Promotions.

From the early going this was exciting and entertaining with Amankulov pressing forward and Lee being forced to fight off the back foot, pick his moments to come forward and launch big shots off the back foot. This made for a fun dynamic, with a lot of big shots being thrown by both. It was however a more technical bout than we typically see in Korea, and both men were showing some defensive know how. For Amankulov there was a tight guard that he was boxing behind, and a nice jab setting up the distance. For Lee there was counter punching, he was using his lead hand to create space and some under-rated footwork to cope with Amankulov's pressure.

After a relatively competitive start we saw drama for the first time, as Amankulov was left cut, from a clash of heads in round 4. The cut was a nasty looking one, but it passed a doctors inspection and, to credit the corner, they took care care of it really well at the end of the round.

Despite being cut Amankulov wasn't discouraged and rocked Lee at the end of round 5 and again early in round 6 as Lee started to press more, and looked to turn the contest into a brawl. The brawling lead to more headclashes and in round 7 Amankulov ended up getting the worse of another nasty headclash. He wasn't cut this time, but was in pain and seemed to lose his composure just a touch when the fight resumed.

With the rounds ticking away the bout was becoming more and more of a fight. The exchanges were becoming more frequent, more brutal and more exciting as both men stood and let their hands go. Sadly for Lee however he seemed to be the one breaking off from the exchanges more often, and seemed to be the man who was more likely to want some space and time to work, whilst Amankulov marched forward, hunting his man.

It seemed Amankulov should have felt like he was in a comfortable lead heading into the 10th and final round. He, however, fought like a man who wanted a KO and continued hunting Lee, trying to get the fight up close with his pressure and high guard, then land his bombs up close. Lee, to his credit, tried to survive, hold spoil and was eventually forced to fight back, despite being tagged by some monstrous shots by Amankulov.

After 10 rounds Amankulov raised his arms in celebration whilst Lee looked a beaten man. Despite that we still went to the score cards and things were tense. A few moments later the scores were read out, and Lee had got the decision, becoming the new champion as a result, and taking a very questionable decision.

KBC set show for June 7th

A few weeks ago we saw a short, temporary return to boxing in South Korea and Nicaragua, but since then the sport has essentially been back on hiatus. Thankfully it appears things are set to change in June with a number of people planning shows.

One of those shows now confirmed for June is a KBC show set for June 7th at the Legend Gym in Jungbong-ro.

The card, like many KBC shows, is nothing special but is scheduled to feature 6 bouts, all featuring professional novices.

From the 6 scheduled bouts on this card 5 will be set over a 4 round distance whilst the other is a 6 rounder.

Sadly none of the bouts are hugely interesting, with the main event being between Lee Man Suk (2-0) and Hyun Jin Kim (2-0-1, 2), but it is still great to see that boxing will be back in Korea again in June and the KBC are one of the ones leading the way for the sport in the country.

The Korean Boxing Committee have stated that the show will be run with social distancing, though it's not totally clear what the plan for the show is on a health basis, such as whether masks will worn and whether temperature checks will be done.

Dream Fights 2017 cancelled, KBF and KBC fall out....again

Earlier this year it seemed that KBC and KBF were set to bury the hatchet and begin to work together for the betterment of Korean boxing. It seemed like Korean boxing was set to have a unified body and was set have the best Korean fighters fighting the best Korean fighters. Sadly though the planning for "Dream Fights 2017" seems to have fallen apart and the show has now been cancelled, with the idea of unification being further away than ever before.

The two bodies had seemingly agreed to put on "Dream Fights 2017", but a falling out has seen the entire show being scrapped, with the KBC fighters who were given permission to fight on the show having that permission taken away. Much to the chargrin of the KBF who released a public statement on January 11th explaining their point of view on the whole mess, and the frustration between the two parties.

The statement, which we have featured below in Korean and in a rough English translation explains the KBF's view on the situation and a few other things, which we will try to quickly run through.

The KBF stated they were set up in 2015 and had seen their fighters persecuted by the KBC, who had been recognised by the WBC as the only official body in Korea. As a result of the WBC/KBC relationship the KBF fighters had found it hard to get international fights. They had, through the relationship between the head of the KBF and Hideyuki Ohashi, been able to bring some Japanese fighters over for KBF shows, but had been unable to send their fighters to Japan, with the KBC's permission. The JBC were prohibited from allowing KBF fighters to fight on their soil due to their commitments to the WBC and the OPBF, meaning any fighter from the KBF wanting to fight in had to get express permission from the KBC to do so, essentially allowing the KBC to have power over fighters thqt weren't even under their banner.

In November 2016 Jin Wook Lim, a KBF fighter, was given special permission to fight in Japan for the OPBF Super Bantamweight title on a one-off basis. It seemed like the KBC and the KBF were beginning to work together and that seemed to be the belief of the KBF which allowed Buffalo Promotions to arrange a co-body show, with the KBC agreeing. Sadly however it appears the two sides have fallen out time, with promises by the KBC not having been kept and the KBF now unable to sanction the bouts, with the KBF laying the blame firmly at the feet of KBC head honcho Hong Soo-hwan .

It seems now that Korean boxing has completely killed any dreams of unifying the two major bodies, and it could be a very long time until the two sides speak about a co-show again.

At the press conference, I want to correct the comments of KBC President Hong Suk-hwan. The opposition, which could be seen as a strife at the press conference with the name of unification, did not correct the controversy in the opinion that it would not benefit the professional boxing system as a whole.

First, Hong said that KBF had been actively supporting the Japanese expedition.
But it is different from the fact.

KBF has received tremendous persecution from KBC for two years since August 1, 2014.
By 2014, 2015, and the first half of 2016, I was able to play a game with KBF player by bringing Japanese players to Korea with difficulty because of friendship with the Association of Japan Gymnasium Association Ohashi, but I could not go to Japan as a unique right of KBC.

This is because the WBC operates a one-country 1 commission system, and the OPBF is also a member of the WBC and strictly followed the guidelines, and the Japanese commission, JBC, firmly adhered to its commitment.

In the competition sponsored by the Daewon Promotion, the following will be participated in the competition by the presidents and players of Japan Ohashi. According to KBF's Im Jin-wook and Baiyan player's performance, Daewon Promotion receives the promise of OPBF title match through Japan tour from Ohashi.

On Oct. 9, 2016, KBF will accept a one-time cooperation agreement with KBC to confirm that Eun-hye Lee belonging to KBC has traveled to Osaka, Japan, to request WBO Women's Title Match.

KBC has helped all the KBF players to Japan in the same way as President Hong Suk-hwan said, but it is not true, and I have to say that there is evidence of that. I also point out that JBC's official invitation game is only for KBF .

On January 22, 2017, KBF title match between KBF player and KBC player will be proposed from Buffalo Promotion side at Incheon Seonam Gymnasium. KBF will notify KBF Title Match that it is not possible to compete against other players in the KBF Title Match.

Buffalo Promotions will take a look at the KBF to see if there is a rivalry between KBF and KBC players. The KBF will notify Buffalo Promotions of the inability to contact the KBF deliberation committee on December 16, 2016, in consideration of the violation of the articles of association of the two organizations, any contact between the two organizations and no promise regarding this and the emotions of the KBF gymnasium .

It is true that KBF was embarrassed in the game because it was a game based on the promise of KBC Hong Suhwan without any prior communication with KBF.

At the press conference on January 9, 2017, KBC Chairman Hong-Soo Hong will integrate and KBF President Lee In-kyung will take over and I will help with the honorary chairmanship. I will add that the integrated group will be KBC.

Obviously it is a breach of promise and deception. The integration into KBC would not have been approved for the game on January 22 and there would not have been a press conference.

As Chairman of Hong Soo-Whan, we must stick to KBC because we have to maintain tradition. President In-kyung Lee promised that KBF integration and shipbuilding would be changed to Korea. . Who says Koryo and Joseon are not our history? Change their thinking and argued for integration into KBF.

KBC can not follow KBF in size, organization, and administration. It is diplomatically isolated and there are not only the workforce to see international affairs but also debt. We can not find any reason why KBF has the common sense of scale, organization and administration, and diplomatically perfect KBF name and executive branch.

KBC Chairman Hong-Soo Hwang said at the press conference that KBF was not interested in integration from the beginning by making claims that KBF could not accept. KBF will only look at the style of Chairman Hwang Soo-Whan, who has not changed anything, to look back at the difficult situation at the time.

At the press conference, KBF President Jeon Seon-yong asks KBC President Hong Soo-Whan if he can quickly build a team for the integration committee. President Sohn will answer that.

Jung Sun-yong chairs KBF directors. KBC has no one to administer. KBC is unable to pack the staff.

And I'm talking about integration into KBC. This is not just a premise that Hong Soo-Whan does not want to integrate, but think about it. So when I was working at KBC, I received 8 months' salary, and I received 10 million won. I told the president of Hong Soohwa that I would give up the salary of 30 million won.

Buffalo Promotion is a member of KBF. We will not be able to approve the game on January 22 because of the reversal of President Hong Suk - Hwan. KBF is integrated into KBF.

라이벌전을 갖는다는 것이 현장에서 기자들에게 가장 흥미를 끈 요소인듯 싶었습니다.

왜? 지금 통합이라는 얘기가 나왔는지를 KBF소속 관장님들과 선수 여러분에게 보고 드립니다.

2015년 2월
정식으로 KBF 정관상 조직인 심의위원회가 출범하며 지혜가 필요한 안건들을 하나, 둘 회의를 통해 정리하고 확립해 나가는 과정에서 KBC와의 통합을 주제로 심도있는 회의를 한 바 있습니다.

통합을 환영한다. 단, KBF로의 통합이다!가 결론이었습니다.

이번 기자회견 당시 KBC홍수환회장의 발언을 바로 잡고자 합니다.

통합이라는 명분으로 기자회견을 하는 자리에서 다툼으로 보일 수 있는 반론은 프로권투계 전체에 이익이 되지 못한다는 판단으로 반론하여 바로잡지 않았습니다.

첫번째, 홍회장은 KBF가 일본 원정을 가는 것을 그 동안 적극 지원했다고 얘기했습니다.
하지만 사실과 다릅니다.

KBF는 2014년 8월1일 이래 만 2년동안 KBC로부터 엄청난 박해를 받았습니다.
2014년,2015년,2016년 상반기까지 당시 일본 체육관 협회 오하시회장과의 친분으로 어렵게 일본 선수를 한국으로 데리고 와서 KBF선수와 경기를 할 순 있었지만 일본 원정은 KBC의 고유 권리로서 갈 수가 없었습니다.

왜냐하면 WBC는 1국 1커미션 제도를 운영하고 있기 때문이며 OPBF 또한 WBC 산하 기구로서 철저하게 그 지침을 따르고  일본 커미션인 JBC 또한 확고하게 그 의지를 고수하였습니다.

더원 프로모션이 주최한 경기에 일본 오하시회장 이하 관장 및 선수들이 경기에 참여하게 됩니다.
더원 프로모션측은 KBF의 임진욱선수와 배요한선수의 경기력에 따라 일본 원정을 통한 OPBF 타이틀매치 약속을 오하시회장으로부터 받아냅니다.

얼마의 시간이 지난 어느 날
일본측으로부터 임진욱선수의 동양타이틀매치 도전이 가능함을 통지 받게됩니다.
그런데 KBC의 동의를 받아오는 조건이었습니다.
이때 KBF이인경회장이 KBC홍수환회장에게 부탁해 단 한 건에 대하여 일본 원정시합 동의를 받게 됩니다.

그래서 2016년 11월11일 임진욱선수의 일본 고베에서의 동양타이틀매치가 완성되었습니다.
이 시기는 KBC가 내부 다툼으로 KBF와의 경쟁에서 확연히 열세로 기울었던 시기이기에 KBC입장에서 앞날에 대한 포석이 있어야만 되었으리라 생각했기에 협조가 가능할 것으로 KBF는 예상할 수 있었습니다.

2016년 7월28일에 WBC집행위원이신 이원복고문님을 KBF로 영입했음을 2016년 8월4일 KBF공지를 통해 밝힌 바 있습니다.
WBC와 OPBF, JBC로부터 1국 1커미션 원칙에따라 한국을 대표하는 집행부는 KBF임을 인정 받게됩니다.

2016년 7월28일 이후 JBC초청 한국 선수의 일본 원정경기의 창구는 KBF입니다.
2016년 10월9일에 KBC 소속 이은혜선수가 일본 오사카로 원정을 가서 WBO 여자 타이틀매치요청이 온 것을 KBF는 용인함으로서 한번의 협조를 갚게 됩니다.

KBC는 홍수환회장의 말처럼 KBF 선수들의 일본 원정 경기를 모두 도왔다 하지만 절대 사실이 아님을 밝히며 그에 따른 증빙 자료가 있음을 더불어 말씀드리고 아울로 JBC의 공식 초청 원정 경기는 KBF선수만 가능함을 또한 말씀드립니다.

2017년 1월22일 인천 선학체육관에서 KBF선수와 KBC선수간의 KBF타이틀매치를 버팔로프로모션 측으로부터 제안 받게됩니다.
KBF는 KBF타이틀매치가 소속이 다른 선수와의 경기가 KBF타이틀매치로서 성립할 수 없음을 이유로 불가함을 통지합니다.

버팔로프로모션은 KBF선수와 KBC선수간의 라이벌전이 가능한지를 KBF에 타진하게 됩니다.
KBF는 양 단체의 각 정관의 위배, 양 단체간 어떤 접촉과 이에 관련한 아무런 약속이 없고 또한 KBF 소속 체육관의 정서를 고려 2016년 12월16일 KBF심의위원회 회의를 거쳐 불가함을 버팔로프로모션에 통지합니다.

이번 경기는 KBF와는 전혀 사전 교감없이 KBC홍수환회장 하고의 약속을 바탕으로 진행된 시합이라 KBF 입장에선 많이 당황스러웠던 것이 사실입니다.

버팔로프로모션측은 시합 성사를 요청합니다.
KBF이인경회장은 KBF는 시스템이 있고 심의위원회의 불가 결정이 있어 어려운 문제라 얘기합니다.

이때 KBC홍수환회장은 KBC입장에선 시합을 시켜주는 것이 고마을 따름이라고 얘기합니다.
KBF정선용총장은 과거 KBF심의위원회의 결의에서 KBC와의 통합을 환영한다. 그러나 KBF로의 통합이다라는 결의를 떠 올리며 KBC홍수환회장에게 제의하게 됩니다.

통합의 명분이면 KBF 소속 관장님들에게 말씀드릴 수 있을 것 같습니다.
단, 통합회장은 KBF이인경회장입니다.. 그리고 KBF로의 통합입니다.

KBC홍수환회장은 그렇게 하겠노라 약속을 하여 2017년 1월22일 KBF,KBC선수간의 경기가 우선 승인되었으며 KBF정선용총장은 KBF심의위원에게 일일이 전화를 하고 문자를 남겨 양해를 구하게됩니다.

심의위원회의 불가 결정이 통합이라는 명분때문에 일부 반대가 있었지만 철회가 되었습니다.
KBF는 2017년 1월4일 경기 공지란을 통해 버팔로프로모션의 2017 DREAM FIGHTS 경기를 공식적으로 공지합니다.

2017년 1월9일 기자회견 자리에서 KBC홍수환회장은 통합을 하면 회장은 KBF이인경회장이 맡을 것이고 본인은 명예회장직을 가지고 돕겠다고 말을 합니다.
덧 붙여서 통합 단체는 KBC로 하겠다고 얘기합니다.

분명히 약속 위반이고 기만행위입니다.
KBC로의 통합이라면 1월22일 경기가 승인이 나지 않았을 것이며 기자회견 자리가 마련되지도 않았을 것입니다.

홍수환회장은 전통을 이어가야 하기때문에 KBC를 고수해야한다 하고 이인경회장은 약속을 떠 올리며 KBF로의 통합과 조선이 바껴 대한민국이 되었다 그것이 전통 단절이냐 얘기했고 정선용총장은 고려가 조선이 되었고 조선이 대한민국이 되었다. 고려와 조선이 우리의 역사가 아니라고 누가 얘기하는가? 생각을 바꾸어야하며
KBF로의 통합을 주장했습니다.

KBC는 규모와 조직력,행정력에서 KBF를 따라올 수가 없습니다.
외교적으로 고립되어 있으며 국제일을 볼 인력 자체가 없을 뿐만아니라 채무가 있습니다.
상식적으로 규모와 조직력, 행정력을 갖추고 외교적으로 완벽한 KBF가 왜 KBC이름을 달고 집행부를 만들어야 하는지 어느 것 하나 합당한 이유를 찾을 수 없는 것입니다.

KBC홍수환회장은 KBF가 받을 수 없는 주장을 함으로서 처음부터 통합에 관심이 없었음을 기자회견장에서 내비쳤습니다.
당시 곤란한 상황만 모면하고 보겠다는, 하나도 바뀌지 않은 홍수환회장의 스타일에 KBF는   담담할 뿐입니다.

기자회견장에서 KBF정선용총장은 KBC홍수환회장에게 빨리 통합추진위원회 실무진을 꾸릴 수 있는지 묻습니다.
홍수환회장은 그렇게 하겠노라 대답합니다.

정선용총장은 KBF관장들에게 말합니다.
KBC에는 행정을 담당할 사람이 없습니다.
KBC는 실무진 꾸리는 것 불가능 합니다.

그리고 KBC로의 통합을 얘기하는데 이건 홍수환회장이 통합을 원치 않는다는 전제 일뿐만 아니라 생각해보세요 멀쩡한 KBF가 뭐하러 근심을 사서 들어갑니까?
홍수환회장이 KBF로의 통합을 받기에 그럼 나도 KBC에서 근무할 때 8개월 월급 못 받은 것 하고 대츨 1,000만원 받아 직원 월급 준것 해서 3,000만원 포기하겠다고 홍수환회장에게 얘기했는데 나도 번복이야!라고 얘기합니다.

KBF Vs KBC show set to be the start of a unification!

Earlier this month we reported that there would be a KBF Vs KBC show on January 22nd, with the show setting the two most notable Korean boxing bodies against each other in a remarkable, and potentially massive, show that could help Korean boxing develop in a huge way.

Today that sow was officially announced at the Ramada Hotel in Seoul with the fighters and the teams from the two bodies showing up for the press conference, and talking about the longer term plans.

It seems that both the KBF and KBC are proud of working together for the show, but neither view this as a one off, in stead they view it as the first step towards unifying the two bodies and creating a single major body in Korea, allowing them to fight the threats of the KPBF, KBA and BoxingM together.

At the moment there still seems to be a long way to go before that happens, but with a number of shows in the works for the joint venture it does look like something both parties are wanting to work towards, and both will be looking to do their best to improve Korean boxing. There is however still talks about what name the joint organisation will take, with both parties said to be determined to keep their name for the eventual unified body.

As for the boutson the show, the main event willsee Sa Myung Noh (9-2, 2) battle against Nam Joon Lee (8-5-3, 4) in a Featherweight bout set for 10 rounds. The bout is a genuinely intriguing one with Noh having mixed with the most notable names currently in Korean boxing, losing to Kin Wook Lim and Ye Joon Kim whilst holding a win over Teiru Atsumi, who has gone on to make waves in Japan. As for Lee he has valuable international experience with losses to Qiu Xiao Jun and Masatoshi Kotani but has shown in those defeats that he is a capable fighter and will have no fear at all of facing Noh.

The under-card features two other KBF Vs KBC bouts. One of those is an 8 round Welterweight contest which will see 18 year old I Hoon Jung (5-2-1, 4) face off with the unbeaten In Duck Seo (7-0, 4) whilst the other main support bout will be a Super Flyweight contest between Kyung Hwan Song (3-0, 1) and Yo Han Bae (7-2-1, 1), in what looks like a huge step up for the 19 year old Song.

If the KBC and KBF can work together, as they plan to do, for more than just a single show then we'll be able to get excited about Korean boxing once again. Fingers crossed that the two organisations are doing more than just talk here, but many in Korea have heard about unification for too long to just believe people when the word is mentioned.

Korean boxing set for KBF Vs KBC!

The Korean boxing scene has essentially been a tough one to follow in recent years. Part of that is due to the lack of quality and part of that has been a frustrating civil war between two of the organisations in the country, the Korean Boxing Federation (KBF) and the Korean Boxing Commission (KBC). The two organisations have effectively split much of the talent in the country and and have caused issues to prevent boxing from really growing in the country.

Over the last few days however both organisations have revealed they will begin working together and will have a "KBF VS KBC" show on January 22nd, with the official press conference for the show set to take place at the Ramada Hotel in Seoul on January 9th.

Although the press conference is still days away both organisations have announced 11 bouts for the show, including 3 notable bouts between ranked contenders from the 2 bodies. That includes a Featherweight bout between a former KBF champion and the top ranked KBC fighter, and bouts at Welterweight and Super Flyweight featuring a #1 contender from one organisation facing a champion from the other organisation.

The show, dubbed "2017 Dream Fights" could be the start of a working relationship between the two organisations and potentially help rebuild Korean boxing, rather than have two sides of the street with fighters unable to really prove themselves as the best in the country.

The news has already drawn some excitement from Korean fans and is expected to draw more when the press conference takes place, however some have also shown some cynicism and seem to see the show as a one-off, rather than the start of a new era in Korean boxing. We'll admit we hope it's the start of a Korean boxing revival, especially given Min Wook Kim's retirement last year, but as has been the case in Korean boxing for a while it's hard to get too excited abiu the boxing scene in the country having seen how little talent the country has developed in the last few years.
