According to Korean media inside Japan Korean amateur fighter Ham Sangmyeong has become an over-night sensation following his win, yesterday, at the Rio Olympics.
The Korean youngster is the only Korean boxer to compete at this year's games, having being given a position after another fighter pulled out in the days running upto the games. Yesterday he kicked off his gold medal campaign with a win over Victor Rodriguez and was immediately a star back home and the press has reported that his facebook has become inundated with friend requests. Sadly for those would be fans he has now hit the maximum allowed, of 5000 friends and has had to reject requests.
He thanked those who had cheered him and was happy to progress but now appears to be focusing on preparing for his next bout, which will takes place on Sunday against China's Zhang Jiawei.
Although boxing is viewed as an almost dead sport in Korea it seems clear that the youngster is popular. And if he does turn professional after the games he could, hopefully, help kick start the Korean professional scene, which has struggled in recent years.
