Back in January Norihito Tanaka (19-7, 10) [田中教仁] vacated the Japanese Minimumweight title and stated that he was going to pursue a world title fight. Since then things have been quiet whilst IBF champion Pedro Taduran and WBO champion Wilfredo Mendez have made defenses of their titles. We've also seen a date set for WBC champion Wanheng Menayothin's next defense.
Now that leaves just a single possible opponent for Tanaka to face, WBA champion Knockout CP Freshmart (20-0, 7) [น็อคเอาท์ ซีพีเฟรชมาร์ท].
According to Thai sources that bout has recently taken a step closer to reality with the bout now being pencilled in for March 3rd at Nakhon Sawan, and will be announced in the coming days.
Although the source we've got the got the story from is reliable, and is usually well ahead of everyone else for news like that, it does seem hard to believe the bout could be put together for such a small turn around, with March 3rd being just 3 weeks away. If the bout is made for then then announcements would likely be made this week to allow everyone to get things in place.
If this is confirmed we would expect things to be moved very quickly, and genuinely we think this is a fairly interesting looking bout. The champion would be the clear favourite, of course he would, but the experienced and rugged Tanaka would certainly ask questions of Knockout over 12 rounds.
