New champions crowned at Korakuen Hall!

4/8/2025

On Tuesday Korakuen Hall played host to the latest Diamond Glove show, which had 4 very good looking Japanese title fights on it, in what was the real gem of the 2025 Champion Carnival. The card wasn’t a major one internationally, though at least one of the bouts was expected to have implications on the world level with one man looking to pick up a Japanese title en route to fighting for world honours in the not too distant future, whilst another was a much anticipated rematch in a great clash of staples, whilst the other pit  man going through a late career run against someone looking for success in a second weight class.

The first of the three fights saw 40 year old Yuichi Ideta (19-17-1, 10) [出田裕一] fail to continue his incredible late career run, as Ryota Toyoshima (21-3-1, 12) [豊嶋亮太] took the Japanese title at 154lbs in dominant fashion. Ideta, seeking his 4th defense, really had little to test Toyoshima, who had been Japanese and Asian champion at 147lbs, From the opening moments the 29 year old Toyoshima just seemed too good, too sharp, too quick and too accurate. He took control almost immediately with his boxing and his movement, and allowed the slower, older, Ideta to walk himself into harm. Ideta's style was pretty much made to order and Toyoshima had fun as he used a busy jab, landed good counters, and in round 4 he unloaded on Ideta, several times, before the referee saved Ideta, who was being too tough for his own good.

The stoppage, at 2 minutes 11 into round 4, saw Toyoshima put on one of his best performances. After the bout he explained "I respected Ideta, who has won by gritty means, and went all out to defeat him. I've seen (the fighter who faced Ideta) get caught up in fights even when he kept his distance, so I thought I would go for a physical fight." and later admitted, "I fought with the feeling that if I lost today, it was over. If I don't win here, there's no restart. Neither do I have any other options.". He also admitted that he feels 154lbs is his best weight, that he keeps his stamina better and feels more comfortable there than he did at Welterweight. As for IDeta, it seemed clear he had a lot of respect for Toyoshima, and he explained "I had wanted to fight Toyoshima, so even though I lost, I am satisfied. I was stopped, so I can't say I gave it my all, but I'm glad I was able to fight."

The second title bout was much, much, more competitive and saw  Josuke Nagata (8-2) [永田丈晶] take a razor thin decision over Ryota Yamauchi (13-5, 12) [山内涼太], for the second time, to become a 2-time Japanese Flyweight champion. This was as hotly contested as bouts coming, with Nagata looking to repeat his 2023 win over Yamauchi, and Yamauchi looking to score revenge. Yamauchi looked the bigger punch early on, and landed some of the more eye catching single blows, but Nagata was also looking to set a higher tempo, with shots up and down, and the man who was pressing, forcing exchanges. The exciting back and forth saw neither man manage to establish any real control of the action After 5 rounds Yamauchi was narrowly up, 49-46 and 48-47 whilst Nagata had the other card 48-47, with the open scoring announcement being made between rounds 5 and 6. From there on Nagata fought like a man possessed, getting inside, and trading body blows, trying to grind down Yamauchi, who was being tagged on the inside in round 7n and back up in round 8 a Yamauchi began to feel the pace and his work rate began to drop off.  Going into the final round it seemed like Nagata had probably done enough to avoid a loss, but the job, of course, wasn’t done and both men unloaded some of their best in the final 3 minutes, with Nagata refusing to back off, and Yamauchi landing anything he could.

After 10 rounds the judges had this 95-95, 96-95 and 97-93 to give Nagata the win. All 3 judges gave Nagata at least 4 of the last 5 rounds, to secure the win After the bout he explained "I was behind in the public judgement, but I changed my mindset and stuck to my own boxing. I thought about quitting after losing the belt and losing the next match, but thanks to the encouragement of my wife and those around me, I was able to get this far." And then spoke about his new born son, explaining "I'm grateful that he was born safely. I'm really glad." As for Yamauchi, he was harsh on himself, though hopefully he realises he was involved in one of the best Japanese title bouts we’ll see this year.

In the main event we saw confirmation of what many in Japan were already expecting, with a new star breaking out. That was Kyosuke Takami (9-0, 7) [高見享介] who claimed the Japanese Light Flyweight title with a stoppage win over defending champion Toshiki Kawamitsu (11-2, 7) [川満俊輝]. Takami, who has long been on the radar as one of Japan’s top rising talents The bout started with an air of tension, with Kawamitsu landing a good bout shot and Takami landing good shots up top, working well off his jab. At the end of the opening round Takami showed his dangerous side, as he landed a good left hook, letting Kawamitsu know that the challenger was genuine very dangerous. In round 2 Takami moved up a gear, landing some solid body shots and forced Kawamitsu to respond in an attempt to get his respect. Takami then moved up another gear,, using his feet and jab, really well, whilst also tagging the body of the champion, who was then beginning to look like cracks were forming. To his credit however Kawamitsu dug deep and had a solid round 5 as he narrowed the scores, slightly, on the open scoring, with scores of 49-46, twice,m and 50-49 all in favour of Takami.

Sadly for Kawamitsu he couldn’t build on the moments he had in round 5, as am uppercut form Takami rocked Kawamitsu and a follow up forced the referee to step in and wave off the action.

After the bout Takami explained "I never lost my spirit, but I fought while thinking to myself, 'this is the strength of a champion.' The belt that you win after overcoming difficulties is worth it." and then spoke of the passing of Kanamu Sakama and Haru Nagano Following the win Tsyuyoshi Hamada explained "He barely got hit, and he fought freely while thinking. He seems ready to fight in a world match at any time." Akihiko Honda also praised Takami, stating "It's been a long time since we've had a talented, young champion with star power. He's definitely a player who will become a world champion in the future."

Notably Takami seems to be confident of winning a world title himself, explaining "I think I can say some arrogant things now that I've defeated my opponent. The weight cut is tough, but I'm going to aim for the world in the light flyweight division. I want to go to the world as soon as possible. I want to challenge an organization that has a chance."

As for Kawamitsu he explained "I've always sparred with strong fighters, but I'm not good with fighters who are good at keeping their distance, and I haven't been able to overcome that until today." He then added "I thought I was losing points in the public judging, so I thought I had to change the flow, but I continued to take punches. I was too naive to think that he would exchange punches, and I was weak in the second half, not being able to bring it to a close exchange,"

On Tuesday Korakuen Hall plays host to an excellent card, with 3 Japanese title fights, as the Champion Carnival picks up with one of the domestic shows of the year.

On Monday, ahead of the show, the men involved in those title fights took part in their weigh for the bouts.

The first of the 3 title bouts will see 154lb Japanese champion Yuichi Ideta (19-16-1, 10) [出田裕一] defending his title against as Ryota Toyoshima (20-3-1, 11) [豊嶋亮太], with Ideta looking to build on  an excellent late career run. On the scales Ideta was 153.5lbs whilst Toyoshima was right on the divisional limit, at 154lbs. For Ideta, who is seeking his 4th defense, he explained "I'm in perfect condition. I'm always in high spirits, but this time I had a lot of conflicts and changes in my feelings before the match, but I was able to make myself the strongest I've ever been." As for Toyoshima, he seemed confident and went on to say "I have prepared several scenarios. It may be a back-and-forth battle, but if I can display my own boxing skills, I can definitely win. Defeating a champion who has reigned for so long will be a test of my future. I think it would be rude not to go all out. I want to take the title,"

The second title bout on the show will see Josuke Nagata (7-2) [永田丈晶] face former WBO Asia Pacific champion Ryota Yamauchi (13-4, 12) [山内涼太] for the vacant Japanese Flyweight title, in a bout that is actually a rematch of a 2023 bout that Nagata won.On the scales both men came in at 107.7lbs, a bit under the the limit but not by much. Nagata came across as confident, explaining "I've finally made it to the title match. I want to do my own boxing and reclaim the throne." Yamauchi, who lost the first bout between the two men, explained "Finally, tomorrow's long-awaited match will arrive. I'll do the same thing as always. I feel more relaxed than my opponent. I'm not nervous, and I've lost once” before adding that “there’s no pressure” on him.

The stand out bout for the show is the Japanese Light Flyweight title bout, which will see champion Toshiki Kawamitsu (11-1, 7) [川満俊輝] defending his title against Kyosuke Takami (8-0, 6) [高見享介], in a bout that has looked among the very best of this year’s Champion Carnival bouts. On the scales both men were 107.6lbs, comfortably under the divisional limit of 108lbs. Kawamitsu told the press "Weight loss is always tough, but I've been training hard, so I'm confident. If I use the boxing I've been developing with trainer Yokoi (Ryuichi), I can win," before adding "He's young, energetic, ranked in the world, and has been on a roll since beating a veteran, so I was half excited to fight him, and half anxious and scared, but I have more momentum, so I'm going to show my strength." As for Takami, who is in his first title bout, he explained "I'm in perfect condition. I've been able to face the challenge as usual. No complaints, I've been able to train well. I'm in great shape." Adding "I'm excited. I'm looking forward to taking on a strong champion. Teiken Gym fighters are winning titles, so I'll be too." And finally going on to say "If I can clear this, I'd like to set my sights on the world, but first I want to focus on the match in front of me."

Japanese title triple header announced for April!

2/12/2025

Earlier today Misako Boxing Gym announced their April edition of Diamond Glove, and it is a huge domestic card, acting a triple header, with 3 Japanese title bouts on it, as it really becomes the star show of this year’s Champion Carnival.

One of the three bouts, arguably the stand out of the three, will see  Japanese Light Flyweight champion Toshiki Kawamitsu (11-1, 7) [川満俊輝] defending his title against Kyosuke Takami (8-0, 6) [高見享介], in a bout that will likely see the winner make a major move towards a world title bout. For Kawamitsu the bout serves as his third defense, and will see him look to build on a stellar 2024 which saw him going 2-0 (2). As for Takami this will be in his first title bout, and he will look to make huge strides towards world level, and toward proving he is as good as he has looked. In 2024 Takami beat Kenichi Horikawa, Wulan Tuolehazi and Jomar Caindog, in a brilliant year that really saw him announce himself as one of the stand prospects at 108lbs.

At Flyweight we’ll see former champions collide as former Japanese champion Josuke Nagata (7-2) [永田丈晶] faces former WBO Asia Pacific champion Ryota Yamauchi (13-4, 12) [山内涼太] in what will be the second bout between the two men, who will be fighting for the vacant title. These two clashed in 2023 when the then unbeaten Nagata defeated Yamauchi to claim the title, which was also vacant back then. Sadly for Nagata his reign was a short one losing to Jukiya Iimura in his first defense, and when he secured his shot at the Champion Carnival Iimura was the champion, though Iimura chose to vacate the title to fight for the OPBF belt, which he won in January. For Yamauchi this is a chance to avenge one of his losses, whilst Nagata looks to become a 2-time Japanese champion and take a step towards the rematch with Iimura that he clearly wants.

The other title bout will be at 154lbs as Ryota Toyoshima (20-3-1, 11) [豊嶋亮太] looks to build on his success at Welterweight, as he takes on under-rated champion Yuichi Ideta (19-16-1, 10) [出田裕一], who is having a bizarrely impressive run late in his career. The 40 year old Ideta will be seeking his 4th defense, and despite his record once reading 13-15-1, he has been on a great stretch late in his career, and beaten the likes of Ryota Yada, Rei Nakajima and Makoto Kawasaki. As for Toyoshima, he managed to claim the JBC, OPBF and WBO Asia Pacific titles at Welterweight and earned his shot at IDeta late last year, when he shut out Yasuomi Soda.

The show will be held on April 8th at Korakuen Hall and will be shown live on Fuji on Demand

Kawamitsu retains Japanese title, Isotani wins Youth belt

12/10/2024

Earlier today we had the latest Diamond Glove show at Korakuen Hall, the final Diamond Glove event of 2024.

The main event saw Japanese Light Flyweight champion Toshiki Kawamitsu (11-1, 7) [川満俊輝] record his second defense, as he stopped Natsu Ohashi (8-4-1, 6) [大橋波月] in 2 rounds. Despite being the under-dog, Ohashi came out aggressively, like a man with a point to prove, and he had early success, before a nasty head clash shook Ohashi. The referee allowed a break for Ohashi to recover from the clash before the action resumed, with Ohashi quickly back on the front foot. The hyper aggressive style of Ohashi was making for compelling action, but left him open, and part way through round 2 he ended up eating a left hook from Kawamitsu, who made no mistake and sensed Ohashi was in trouble. He unloaded on the challenger who was stopped by the referee as Kawamitsu landed on him against the ropes.

From the off this was all action and despite the early loss Ohashi definitely made new fans, who will be excited to see his next bout. As for the champion, he is expected to return in the Champion Carnival in 2025, where he will defend his title against Kyosuke Takami (8-0, 6) [高見享介], who is quickly emerging as one of the new faces at 108lbs.

In the chief support bout Taishin Isotani (8-3, 5) [磯谷大心] claimed his first professional title, as he took a hard fought decision over Taiga Kato (6-3, 2) [加藤大河] to claim the Japanese Youth title at 147lbs. The bout saw both men look to control the distance, with Kato looking to make the most of his jab whilst Isotani looked to land harder hooks, it made for some very tough to score action, as neither man seemed to really land too many telling blows, and after 4 rounds the cards were 38-38, twice, and 39-37 to Isotani. The 5th round saw Isotani look to up his tempo and vary his output. Kato managed to fight back hard in rounds 6 and 7 before the crowd got wild for the final round, which Isotani did enough in to claim victory, albeit by a narrow margin with scores of 77-75 and 78-74 in his favour, whilst the third judge had it even at 76-76.

Also on this card was former Japanese Featherweight champion Ryo Sagawa (13-4, 8) [佐川遼] who made light work of hard hitting Filipino veteran Jon Jon Estrada (18-14-1, 14). Sagawa established his jab and range through much of the first half, keeping the dangerous Estrada at bay, before detonating with a hard right hand late in the round, dropping Estrada for the count, at an official time of 2:47 of round 1.

Masuda retains Japanese title, Takami shines

11/2/2024

Earlier today from Korakuen Hall, we had the latest "WHO'S NEXT DYNAMIC GLOVE on U-NEXT", which featured several noteworthy bouts and fighters.

The first of the noteworthy bouts saw Kota Kaneko (6-1, 5) [金子虎旦] bounce back from an upset loss to Michael Casama, suffered in July, as he stopped Chinese visitor ShunCai Hou (3-4-1, 1). The Chinese fighter was on the front foot early on, forcing Kaneko to use his fight, and it seemed like Hou was buoyed in confidence by Kaneko’s recent loss as he kept pressing forward. Sadly for him however his aggressive style left him open to shots from Kaneko, who was landing clean and hurt Hou in round 3, though Hou survived the worrying moments. In round 5 Hou was cut from a clean shot up top and it seemed clear he was being broken down by Kanemo, who had seen out the best the visitor had to offer. Hou showed no quit, and tried to continue pressing forward, but in round 7 a combination from Kaneko forced the referee to step in and wave off the contest, giving Kaneko his 6th win and handing Hou his first stoppage loss.

Arguably the performance of the day came from 22 year old Light Flyweight Kyosuke Takami (8-0, 6) [高見享介] who blew away tough Filipino visitor Jomar Caindog (12-5-1, 5), in a statement of intent. Caindog, who had never previously been stopped, was taken out inside a round a left hand from Takami to the body sent the Filipino down for the count, ending the bout after just 78 seconds. Takami, who will be fighting for a Japanese title next year during the Champion Carnival, showed who he is so highly touted, and it would not be a surprise at all to see him mixing at world level within the next 24 months.

Another Japan Vs Philippines bout saw OPBF Super Featherweight champion Yamato Hata (16-2, 15) [波田大和] score a 4th round TKO over Presco Carcosia (12-5, 9), in a non-title bout. This was a lot more competitive than many were expecting with Carcosia coming for the upset and leaving Hata with a cut under his right eye in the opening round and landing a brilliant right hand. Sadly despite the early success for the Filipino he couldn't stop Hata from coming forward, and in round 2 Hata began to break down Carcosia, who lacked the fire power of the Japanese local. Round 3 saw Carcosia realising he was in trouble, as he changed tactics and tried to create space. This was where it started to fall apart with a right hook dropping him late in the round. He beat the count, but was down again later in the round, as he round came to a close. By then it was clear that Carcosia was having the fight beaten out of him, and in round 4 the fight was finally beaten out of him with hard left hands from Hata.

In the main event we saw Japanese Bantamweight champion Riku Masuda (6-1, 6) [増田 陸] record his first defense as he stopped on 40 year old veteran Yoshihiro Utsumi (17-12-6, 10) [宇津見義広]. On paper this was a total mismatch but Utsumi, knowing this was the biggest fight of his 20 year career, showed a real sense of purpose, looking to close the distance and take the fight to the champion. Sadly for Utsumi being determined to win isn't always enough and in round 2 he was cut over the right eye, a round later he was cut over the left eye. He was determined but out classed, out skilled and out punched, with Masuda landing heavy shots and impressing the judges, who had the bout 50-45 after 5 rounds, which was revealed by the open scoring. The power shots of Masuda began to really take their toll in round 6, as he clearly hurt the challenger with a body shot and a round late Utsumi's desire was finally broken, as a left hand to the body sent him down, and left the referee waving off the contest. Despite being cut, dropped and stopped Utsumi had put in a great performance and got a deserved applause for his effort, though it does feel very much like this will be the end of his long career. He gave a great effort, but it wasn’t enough against an excellent, younger, more talented fighter.
