Earlier today sportinfo.az reported that Azeri amateur boxing standout Iman Ahmadli had failed a drugs test and would begin a 1 year suspension, back dated to March 5th 2018, so he will allowed to compete through most of next year..
The Azerbaijan National Anti-Doping Agency (AMADA) found the controversial drug Meldonium, the same thing that Maria Sharapova and Alexander Povetkin failed drug tests for, in his system. The banned medication, which was outlawed by WADA at the start of 2016 has been a controversial subject, but to be caught with it in 2018 really left the authorities with no option but to suspend him.
Ahmadli was one of 4 athletes reported to have been sanctioned by AMADA, with his sentence being among the least significant. The worst of those was for weightlifter Rovshan Fatullayev, who has been given an 8 year suspension, essentially ending his career given he will be 38 by the time he's allowed to return to action. He was found to have committed multiple violations.
Although not a huge name on the international scene Ahmadli was a multi-time Azeri national champion and was regarded as a very good talent in the ring. This set back however will be a major one and will leave questions hanging over his head going forward.
