According to sources in Kazakhstan Roman Zhailauov-Kairatuli (15-2, 9) [Жайлауов Роман] is set to return to the ring in 2020, after more than 4 years away from the ring.
The Kazakh showed real promise early in his career, winning 15 in a row, before back to back defeats in 2015 stopped his ascent. Sadly he's not fought since those losses.
At the moment the full details of Zhailauov's return aren't known though it appears that he will be in a 6 round bout, in Denmark on January 31st against a yet to be named opponent. From what we understand the bout will be fought at Super Middleweight, which will not suit Zhailauov who had previously fought between Light Welterweight and Light Middleweight.
Whilst it's good to hear that Zhailauov will be back we do worry for him given the long break and the move up in weight. It's a real shame he wasn't able to develop his skills slowly and instead suffered losses that really derailed his career, and we wouldn't be shocked to see him pick up another loss in the near future, even if he does pick up a win in his return.
We all know that Gennady Golovkin is the star of Kazakh boxing but the future looks to be bright with the emergence of the very promising Roman Zhailauov (15-0, 9) . The unbeaten 21 year old is building a name for himself and has caught the attention of South African promoter Golden Gloves, who have inked him to a deal.
Under Golden Gloves the unbeaten fighter has scored a couple of wins already. One of those, which can be seen below, was his KO of the year contender against Luyanda Jako.
Over the past few days we've been informed of Zhailauov's next bout, which will again be under the Golden Gloves banner. That bout will see the unbeaten youngster battle against Thompson Mokwana (20-10-1, 12) at the Emperors Palace, Kempton Park, Gauteng on September 19th.
Mokwana is a former 2-time South African Lightweight champion though does enter this bout on the back of successive losses, including a 7th round TKO loss to the very exciting Rishard Commey last time out. Despite the back to back losses he should prove to be a good opponent for the Kazakh Kid. An impressive win against Thompson could potentially see him being pushed harder by Golden Gloves who have the ability to get him very big fighters in the bear future.
