It's fair to say Korean boxing is in the dumps right now, though there are still a few success stories including that of the unbeaten Eun Hye Lee (7-0, 2) who has managed to rise through the ranks in recent years and claim a WBO regional title, in fact not only has she been able to claim the WBO Asia Pacific female Flyweight title but she's also been able to defend it.
For Lee the next challenge is to win a world title, something she has has the chance to do on June 27th as she drops down to Light Flyweight to battle against Thai Ploynapa Sakrungrueng (12-5-1, 1) in a contest for the WBO title.
For those unaware Lee the 32 year old Lee turned professional in 2011 and claimed a Korean national title in just her 3rd bout defeating Korean based Canadian Amy Berezowski in a competitive 8 rounder for the Korean Light Flyweight title. In 2013 she moved up in weight before claiming the WBO Asia Pacific female Flyweight title in her 5th bout as a professional fighter.
The more experienced Thai has fought 18 times though is just 21 years old. She made her debut aged 16 and has been matched relative hard with bouts against the likes of Ju Hee Kim, twice in Korea, In fact she has fought thrice in Korea where she has gone 0-3
The title hasn't the richest of histories but it has had one of the stand out female fighters holding it, with Argentinian starlet Yesica Yolanda Bopp being the only previous holder of the belt. Bopp won the belt in 2009 before giving it up recently to take time away from the ring and spend it with her newly born child. She'll likely be eyeing the title when, and if, she makes a return to the sport and there is little doubting that she'd be favourite over either of these two. That however doesn't take away from this match up which will mean a lot to both fighters involved in it.
For those who haven't seen either Lee or Ploynapa we've included footage of both fighters in action below. We'd also like to say thank you to WBO official Leon P. Panoncillo, Jr for confirming this match up.
