OPBF #12 ranked Super Flyweight Melvin Gumban (18-0, 9) may not be one of the biggest name prospects in the Philippines but he is a man who knows that he will need to step up sooner rather than later. After 18 fights as a professional in a career that began back in 2010 Gumban may know that he needs to have a break out year if he is ever going to fulfill his early potential.
We can't say that 2015 will be that year, however he does seem set to start it quickly and on January 18th he faces his stiffest test so far as he battles against Weljan Ugbaniel (13-2-1, 4). The bout, set to take place at the Gaisano Country Mall Carpark, will be for the GAB Super Flyweight title and see the winner taking a huge step forward in their career.
The 24 year old Gumban, dubbed "Top Gun", will be fighting for his second professional title after having previously won the PBF Super Flyweight title back in 2012 when he out pointed Nelson Llanos. Unfortunately Gumban failed to defend that belt though has stacked up 9 successive wins since that win, including 6 by stoppage.
Ugbaniel hasn't yet won any gold, though did come close in 2012 when he fought to a split decision draw with the then unbeaten Gabriel Altarejos in a bout for the WBC Youth Intercontinental Super Flyweight title. At the time that draw looked a great result for Ugbaniel though Altarejos has been stopped in 3 subsequent bouts. That draw is the best result on his record though he has won his last 3 and is unbeaten in 4 bouts dating back to July 2011, when he was stopped by Welbeth Loberanis.
This looks like a great test for Gumban and if he gets past Ugbaniel with ease we'd not be shocked to see him pushing on towards much bigger bouts by the end of the year.
