This past weekend boxing fans in general were looking towards the US as Roman Gonzalez made his HBO debut and Gennady Golovkin defended his Middleweight title. Unsurprisingly neither Golovkin nor Gonzalez struggled to maintain their unbeaten records and their lofty standing in sport.
Things however didn't go to plan for the highly regarded Mexican slugger Adrian Estrella (22-1, 20) who lost his unbeaten record in one of the biggest upsets of the year so far.
The world ranked Estrella was supposed to score his 23rd straight win and roll over Filipino visitor Eden Sonsona (34-6-2, 12). Unfortunately for Estrella it appears that Sonsona failed to read the script and instead the Filipino shocked the Mexican boxing scene with a 2nd round KO.
From the opening moments it seemed like Estrella was expecting the win and was a little over-confident. That should have changed early in the bout when the Mexican was rocked but instead he decided to fight fire with fire.
The typically Mexican attitude of Estrella cost him in round 2 when Sonsona caught him with a monstrous right hand that dropped Estrella. The Mexican did get to his feet before the count was in no fit state to continue as Sonsona claimed his biggest win and the WBC International Silver Super Featherweight title.
For the 26 year old Filipino this may well be the start of exciting run towards a potential world title fight and will certainly see him getting a mention over the next few days a potential upset of the year winner. Sadly for Estrella, and those hoping to see Estrella in with the top fighters in the division, this is a harsh lesson in why you should never over-look an opponent based on their record alone.
