Earlier today news in Kazakhstan broke that unbeaten fighter Aslan Mukanov [Аслан Муканов] has been declared insane following the killing of his son in law last year, in one of the saddest stories we've had to report.
The fighter, who was 6-0 (5), had been arrested last year on suspicion of murder after the death of a relative last year.
Various Kazakh news sources reported that Mukanov had gone to his sisters house in Altyn Dala, Kostanay, Kazakhstan and stabbed a man 8 times in the neck with a knife last July. He then fled the scene on foot before being arrested around 8KM (5 miles) away.
The trial and investigation on the case lasted around a year before concluding today at court with Mukanov being found to have no criminal liability due to being found insane.
At court today the verdict was:
"The court ruled that Aslan Sapargalievich Mukanov’s committed the act prohibited by the criminal law, stipulated by clause 3 of part 2 of article 99 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, is declared liable. Mukanov’s criminal case should be terminated and released from criminal liability on the basis of article 16 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan in view of Mukanov during the commission of a socially dangerous act in a state of insanity,"
As a result of the verdict Mukanov will be given treatment at a hospital in Almaty. The court also added that he had suffered from a chronic mental disorder. Court documents explained:
"By the same decision, A. Mukanov was assigned compulsory treatment in a specialized psychiatric hospital with intensive monitoring. The court order did not enter into legal force"
As a boxer Mukanov's entire professional career had been fought in Colombia. He had made his debut in August 2018 and his final bout came in March 2019, when he won a minor title in Colombia. Prior to becoming a professional Mukanov had been a very talented amateur, winning a number of national level tournaments before severing ties with the domestic amateur authorities and beginning his professional career.
*Note - Kazakh news sites suggest that the victim was bother the "son in law" of Mukanov, but also his wife's husband, which would make the victim his brother in law. Hence some confusion and a lack of clarity which has been lost in translation.
