Earlier today at the Korakuen Hall fight fans had the chance to see the touted Hayate Kaji (12-0, 9) [梶颯] extend his winning record, but he was forced to work for his victory.
The unbeaten fighter from the Teiken Gym, was up against Filipino fighter Arnold Garde (10-7-3, 4).
On paper this was a mismatch, it was supposed to be another straight forward win for Kaji, who looks destined for big things. Instead however Garde served as a good test, frustrating Kaji in the early rounds and really playing the part of the upset minded traveller.
After a solid start however Garde slowed down and Kaji began to find more success with his power shots, going on to take the unanimous decision with scores of 80-73, 78-75 and 78-74.
Although tipped as a star of the future the 21 year old Kaji certainly has areas to develop, as seen again today, before he thinks about a title fight.
