We have been informed by one of our Japanese sources that there is a serious threat to the idea of TBS airing a live New Year's Eve boxing card this year from Japan. If they don't air one it will be the first year since 2010 that they have not shown a card, more specifically a card headlined by Kazuto Ioka (15-1, 9).
The problems, from what we under-stand, have arisen due to Ioka's struggle to pin down a Flyweight world champion as an opponent for the date. This was exacerbated by the fact that WBA champion Juan Carlos Reveco (34-1, 18), a possible opponent for the date, suffered a nasty injury that has pushed back a mandated bout with Yodmongkol Vor Saengthep (34-2, 20). That effectively ruled out Reveco for the date and with Juan Francisco Estrada (30-2, 22) recently signing to fight Joebert Alvarez (14-0-1, 6) that ruled him out as well. As a result Ioka appears to have been left with no other option than to cancel any plans for a Flyweight title bout on that date.
There is a very slim chance that Ioka will try to break the bank to get a second shot at IBF champion Amnat Ruenroeng (14-0, 5) though it would seem highly unlikely to see that bout with Amnat currently looking likely to fight Zou Shiming (5-0, 1) in 2015 in a bout that would be financially huge, even more so than a rematch with Ioka, for the Thai.
Whilst there has been no confirmation that Ioka or TBS have given up airing a card on that date it does appear unlikely given that time is running out on the year. There could be a back up plan to have the show headlined by Ryo Miyzaki (21-1-3, 12) in a Light Flyweight world title bout however that would still see a deal being rushed through and we imagine that even that's too late to organise for December 31st.
It's a shame if we do lose one of the now traditional New Year's Eve shows however there are strong rumours that we may instead see a Fuji TV card aired on the day instead with Naoya Inoue (7-0, 6) in the main event and we have already had confirmation that Tokyo TV will be airing a world title triple header to close the year.
