We're sad to report that Filipino fighter Merlito Sabillo (23-1-1, 12) was defeated last night in Mexico and as a result lost his WBO Minimumweight title.
Sabillo, defending the belt for the 3rd time, was upset by the little known Francisco Rodriguez Jr (14-2, 10) who dropped Sabillo in the second round before grinding him down. By round 10 the only thing keeping Sabillo in the fight was his toughness though referee Eddie Claudio was forced to save him as he took big shots.
This is unfortunately the second time an Asian fighter has lost a Minimumweight world title to a Mexican so far this year after Xiong Zhao Zhong was upset by Osvaldo Novoa. It now seems that all hopes hang with IBF champion Katsunari Takayama who we expecting to see defend his title against fellow Japanese fighter Shin Ono in the coming months.
