Earlier today ALA Boxing Promotions held a press conference to officially announce Pinoy Pride 31.
The show, which is set to take place at the Cebu City Waterfront Hotel & Casino has been set for 4th and features a genuinely brilliant, and much anticipated, main event between current WBO Light Flyweight champion Donnie Nietes (35-1-4, 21) and former unified Minimumweight champion Francisco Rodriguez Jr (17-2-1, 11), of Mexico.
The match up is a WBO mandatory title defense for Nietes and was a bout that was teased late last year when Rodriguez fought Jamor Fajardo on the under-card of Nietes's bout with Carlos Verlarde. Unfortunately Fajardo gave Rodriguez a tougher than expected bout and held the talented Mexican to a draw, delaying this bout to give Rodriguez time to defeat Fajardo in a rematch.
Although Rodriguez struggled with Fajardo, twice, we cannot ignore the fact that the talented Mexican had a break out year in 2014 with wins against Merlito Sabillo, to claim the WBO title at 105lbs, and Katsunari Takayama, to unify the WBO and IBF titles in a FOTY contender. Prior to those bouts Rodriguez was best known for putting on a brave effort in a loss against Roman Gonzalez.
For Nietes this will be his 7th defense of the Light Flyweight title and will see him fighting a Mexican for the 6th straight bout.
As well as the mouth watering main event we've also been informed that the talented Mark Magsayo (10-0, 8) will be in action, apparently he's to fight in his first title bout, and Magsayo's former amateur rival Kevin Jake Cataraja (0-0), who will be making his professional debut.
