Filipino fighter Donnie Nietes may not get the acclaim that some other Filipino fighters get but he is just as good as any of them and his long reign as a world champion has proven that as he's proven to be one of the best little men in the sport. He again showed off his ability this past weekend as he took on Mexico's Carlos Velarde in a WBO Light Flyweight world title defense. We won't try and pretend this was one of the best fights of the year, it really wasn't, but for fans of top tier fighters it's hard to ignore just how talented Nietes. Here we saw him step up through the gears wonderfully and as soon as he began doing that he looked in a completely different level to his Mexican challenger. Sadly it did often seem like Velarde was so out of his depth that Nietes never really had to push himself.
