There is something about Kazakhstan fighters and pure unadulterated power that seems to make them must watch fighters. The best example if, of course, Gennady Golovkin who is one of boxing's biggest punchers in world boxing. Another is perhaps Zhanat Zhakiyanov (22-1, 15) who claimed the European Bantamweight title with a 1 punch KO of the defending champion Karim Guerfi (20-3, 5) and really put himself on the map as a result.
At the time of the stoppage it seemed Zhakiyanov was being out boxed, Guerfi was, at times, making him look silly with his movement and accurate shots, but the power in the right hand of the challenger was a true equaliser and a huge shot in round 5 sent Guerfi down hard. The Frenchman tried to recover to his feet but was unable to beat the count and in fact needed medical attention after the fight before Zhakiyanov was awarded his title.
The victory is the best of Zhakiyanov's career so far and although we're not sure how a Kazakh can qualify for a European title we're happy to say well done to "ZZ" who stopped a man who beat recent world title challenger Stephane Jamoye last year.
