Tomorrow fans across Japan will get the chance to see a really intriguing Super Bantamweight bout between Japan's very own Shingo Wake (20-4-2, 12) [和氣 慎吾] and Dominican puncher Jonathan Guzman (21-0-0-1, 21), who faceoff for the vacant IBF title. Today the two men took part in their official weigh in for the bout and both made weight.
On the scales Wake was about 121.7lbs, comfortably under the maximum allowed 122lbs. The Japanese southpaw is lighter than he has been in recent fights, but about the same as he was for his 2014 bout with Jaesung Lee. Althought lighter than usual it would seem that he's not drained and is instead just a man who has trained that little bit harder for this fight than he has in the past and looked in the shape of his career.
Guzman was well under the weight coming in at 120.8lbs, more than a full 1lb under the limit. It was impressive given that Guzman was well over the limit when he arrived in Japan last week and suggests that he may have over-trained or will be looking to add a lot by fight time. This is his lightest weight in almost 3 years, since he fought Jose Ruiz in August and came in at a reported 118lbs, just like his opponent.
The two men exchanged some sharp words with both predicting they'd win, though things did seem to get heated at the signing ceremony and we suspect the fight will deliver some genuine action tomorrow.
