Yesterday Japanese fight fans saw Kazuto Ioka (20-1, 12) [井岡一翔] successfully defending his WBA Flyweight world title against determined Nicaraguan Keyvin Lara (18-2-1, 6) and Shingo Wake (20-5-2, 12) [和氣 慎吾] give a stirring effort in a loss to Jonathan Guzman (22-0-0-1, 22), in a bout for the IBF Super Bantamweight title fight .
Over-night the TV figures came out and both got impressive numbers.
For Wake the figures were less than they were for Ioka, who is a genuine star. They were still very impressive however with 9.3% from the Kanto district and 9.5% from the Kansai region. In total that gives a rough figure of around 6,000,000 viewers for what was Wake's first world title bout. Despite the loss we'd be shocked if those fans didn't continue to follow Wake and tune in for his ring return, which we suspect will come next year.
As for Ioka his figures were excellent. He drew a brilliant 14.2% from Kansai and 11.5% from Kanto, both outstanding numbers and in fact the Kansai figure challenged the top for the time slot which drew 12% on NTV. In total this was around 8,000,000 fans and a significant boost on his last two fights, which were both disappointing in terms of TV figures. It could well be that fans had had enough of Ioka over-load with this being his first bout of 2016 whilst he had 3 last year.
