A few moments we were informed that "Filipino Flash" Nonito Donaire (33-3, 21) is targeting a March 8th return to the ring in a bout to be scheduled at Super Bantamweight. The bout, rumoured to see Donaire fighting an easier opponent than he has been recently, will be his first bout since losing to Nicholas Walters earlier this year and will be his first bout at 122lbs since he was beaten by Cuban slickster Guillermo Rigondeaux in 2013.
Our source has informed us that the bout will be scheduled to take place in Macau on the same card as Zou Shiming's (6-0, 1) IBF Flyweight title fight against unbeaten Thai champion Amnat Ruenroeng (14-0, 5), as Shiming attempts to become the second Chinese world champion. For Amnat this would be his third defence of the title he won in January this year when he over-came Rocky Fuentes as for Shiming it would be his first world title bout.
From what we understand this show could also feature a WBO Light Flyweight world title bout between Donnie Nietes (34-1-4, 20), the long reigning Filipino world champion, and former unified Minimumweight champion Francisco Rodriguez Jr (16-2-1, 11). This bout has been heavily hinted at ever since Rodriguez was added to Pinoy Pride 28, though he was almost shocked on that card when Jomar Fajardo fought him to a very exciting draw. If Rodriguez does make the move to Light Flyweight soon it would mean the WBO Minimumweight title would become vacant giving the likes of Kosei Tanaka an easy route to a world title.
