Over the past few weeks we'd been reading a lot of rumours regarding the first defense of the WBO Super Bantamweight title by Filipino star Nonito Donaire (36-3, 23), who won the title last year with a thrilling win over Cesar Juarez. Those rumours appear to have been confirmed over the past couple of days and we now know that Doniare will face Hungarian fighter Zsolt Bedak (25-1, 8).
Doniare not only has an opponent but also a date, April 23rd, and a venue for the bout with the contest set to take place Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City,
At the moment the full under-card hasn't been announced but it is being reported that the very promising Mark Magsayo (12-0, 10) will face former world title challenger Chris Avalos (26-4, 19) in a big step up bout for "Magnifico".
As we all know Donaire has been around the world scene for the better part of a decade, and won titles across a number of divisions with stand out wins against Vic Darchinyan, Moruti Mthalane, Hernan Marquez, Fernando Montiel, Omar Andres Narvaez and Toshiaki Nishioka. The same cannot be said of Bedak who's most notable opponent is Wilfredo Vazquez Jr, who beat him in 10 rounds way back in 2010. Since that loss Bedak has run up 10 straight wins but none have been against anyone of any note, and in fact he struggled at home against Amor Belahdj Ali who was stopped last year by Qiu Xiao Jun.
The bout looks like a straight forward win for Donaire though will hopefully be followed by a major bout later in the year.
