A couple of weeks ago we reported that former 2-time WBA Super Flyweight champion Kohei Kono (32-10-1, 13) [河野 公平] would face off with rising Hong Kong star Rex Tso (21-0, 13) [曹星如] on October 7th.
Today Kono, along with Watanabe gym president Hitoshi Watanabe, took part in a press conference.
At the press event Kono stated that he is expecting to be a father before the bout, with his partner expecting to have their first child on June 24th. The bout, as a result, would be his first as a father.
Whilst obviously being proud of becoming a dad Kono also seemed excited about fighting someone like Tso, who's style should gel and it seems clear that he is looking forward to the upcoming bout. His team are also looking at the bout as a potential world title eliminator, with Tso entering the bout #1 ranked by the WBO,and it's possible that Kono could get a world title fight later in the year if he can over-come the "Wonder Kid".
Interestingly Mr Watanabe revealed that the bout could end up being part of a card that could also feature the next defense by WBA Light Flyweight champion Ryoichi Taguchi (25-2-2, 11) [田口良一].
It's unclear at the moment if that would mean Taguchi defending against mandatory challenger Robert Barrera (18-1, 12), who was named the next mandatory for Taguchi, but it would make a lot of sense for Watanabe to try and get that bout sorted shortly giving Taguchi a chance for a really big fight in December, potentially even the unification bout with WBO champion Kosei Tanaka (9-0, 5) [田中恒成].
