Our friend Kyle McLachlan over at Badlefthook.com recently had the chance to talk to Irish boxing manager Gary Hyde, the man who manages a number of top fighters including Cuban sensation Guillermo Rigondeaux (15-0, 10). During their talk Kyle tried to get confirmation on the story that we've been reporting on for a while, a potential match up between Rigondeaux, the WBA "super" and WBO Super Bantamweight champion, and Japan's Shingo Wake (17-4-2, 10).
According to Mr Hyde talks between the two are set to begin if Wake is successful in his upcoming bout, as he take on Filipino Jimmy Paypa (16-2-1, 6) in Wake's 5th defence of the OPBF Super Bantamweight title. The talks are like to be between Mr Hyde, negotiating a deal for Rigondeaux, and Keiichiro Kanehira of Kyeoi, who will likely be dealing on behalf of Wake and was also responsible for the bout between Rigondeaux and Hisashi Amagasa from late last year.
This seems to suggest that the poster for Wake's next bout, which is pictured opposite, really was hinting at Wake's next contest being "The road to the strongest". A clear indication that Wake is confident of winning against Paypa and is confident of fighting Rigondeaux.
The same conversation between Kyle and Mr Hyde also saw Mr Hyde being open to a bout between Rigondeaux and WBC Bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka (22-0-2, 16). Seemingly Rigondeaux could make the 118lb Bantamweight limit if he wanted to go down in weight for that bout whilst Yamanaka has also indicated that he may go up in weight for Rigondeaux.
For those interested in reading Kyle's piece on BLH with quotes specifically from Mr Hyde that is available here along with a link to a podcast where the questions were asked.
A huge thanks to Kyle and the teams at the boxing asylum podcast and badlefthook.com.
