Yesterday at the Ohashi Gym in Yokohama City the media got a treat as they had the chance to see WBA Light Flyweight champion Ryoichi Taguchi (21-2-1, 8) spar with Akira Yaegashi (20-5, 10) for 5 rounds ahead of important fights for both men.
The two fighters, who have sparred in the past, are both putting finishing touches to preparations for bouts in early May.
For Yaegashi the key date is May 1st when he makes his Super Flyweight debut and battles against Thailand's Songseanglek Phosuwangym (1-11)* in a bout at 115lbs. That bout comes after back-to-back stoppage losses for Yaegashi who desperately needs a win to continue his career. Coming into the bout Yaegashi has been working on a slightly altered style with more movement and that was on show during this spar.
Taguchi returns to the ring a few days later, May 6th, as he looks to make the first defense of his world title. He'll be taking on Thai veteran Kwanthai Sithmorseng (49-3-1, 26) in what looks,on paper, like an interesting bout but in reality is expected to be a very 1-sided contest with Taguchi being too good for the more experienced Thai fighter.
