Last night we got to see the long awaited ring return former WBO Bantamweight world champion Tomoki Kameda (32-2, 20) [亀田和毅], who had been out of the ring for more than a year. Sadly for Tomoki fans his return was merely a cameo as he swiftly disposed over over matched journeyman Edgar Alfredo Martinez (18-14-1, 10), though he did so in eye catching fashion.
From the ring walk it was clear that Tomoki was happy to be back in action and he looked crisp and sharp from the off. This wasn't a fighter returning after a year of sitting on his backside but instead like a fighter who had been training and waiting for a chance to go. Having been given that chance Tomoki made no mistake in scoring an eye catching KO against Martinez, who was dropped hard with a left hook after about 80 seconds, and the bout was immediately stopped.
Although the bout wasn't a test for Kameda he'll be glad to have had the quick win and will likely be back in action before the year is out, possibly fighting in Japan under the Kyoei banner if he can be get a license to fight in Japan in the near future.
