Earlier this month Japanese Middleweight champion Hikaru Nishida (15-8-1, 7) [西田 光] was forced to cancel a title defense against former champion Makoto Fuchigami (23-11, 13) [淵上 誠], following an accident after a gym session that left Nishida with a concussion. With Nishida not expected to be rushed back to the ring the JBC have stated that they will instead be ordering an interim title fight.
That fight will see Fuchigami face another former champion, Tomohiro Ebisu (16-4, 16) [胡 朋宏].
Although nothing has been set in stone in regards to date or time some suggestions have been that the bout will take place before Christmas and likely at the Korakuen Hall. The winner would then be mandated to face Nishida when he returns in a bout to unify the "interim" and regular titles.
Whilst Nishida's injury does seem to be a bad one it's good to see that the JBC aren't waiting around and are showing that the title scene can continue to develop even if the champion is injured. Notably it could mean we avoid seeing Nishida Vs Fuchigami III and we could instead get Nishida Vs Ebisu, which would be an intriguing bout to get next year.
