Earlier today at the Korakuen Hall fans saw an enthralling contest between two young fighters each looking to establish themselves as one of the leading Featherweight prospects in Asia.
The bout pitted hard hitting local favourite Tsuyoshi Tameda (12-1-2, 10) against unbeaten Filipino visitor Mark Bernaldez (15-1, 10) in what looked like one of the best match ups of the week. In the ring it proved to be a bout that lived up to expectation with both men landing their share of bit shots, before Tamada eventually over-came the Filipino.
Early on it was Bernaldez who was having the more notable success landing hard shot to the head of Tameda. In round 3 and 4 however the bout started to turn in favour of Tameda as he began to up the pace and break down the body of the Filipino. The change in tactics saw Bernaldez being slow ground down and eventually being dropped in round 7. The knockdown spurred on the Filipino though he was swiftly down again before being stopped.
At 23 years old this will be a hard loss for Bernaldez but one that he can rebuild from, time is certainly on his side. As for the 21 year old Tameda, this is a really oustanding win and should push him on to the verges of a regional title bout.
