Tomorrow fans at the Korakuen Hall will get the chance to see an OPBF "interim" title fight as former Japanese national Welterweight champion Suyon Takayama (23-1, 7) [高山 樹延] battles highly experienced Filipino Joel Dela Cruz (19-23-3, 7).
This morning those two men weighed in for the bout with Takayama weighing just under the limit whilst Dela Cruz was way under, coming in just over 142lb for the bout.
For Takayama the bout is the next logical one, moving towards becoming an OPBF champion after having had a long reign as the Japanese champion. This bout is a stepping stone, but the intention is to fight for the full OPBF title later in the year, something that would see him move towards bigger and better bouts.
For Dela Cruz this bout is a peculiar one. He's viewed as a major under-dog, has nothing to lose and whilst he's not expected to win there is no pressure on him to perform. A win would be a massive shock but just a good performance could see him getting more match ups in Japan in the future.
