Just a few moments ago we were informed that former WBC Flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro (39-13-5, 28) would return to action on April 29th for his second bout of the year.
According to our source the 34 year old Filipino is scheduled to fight Shota Kawaguchi (18-5-1, 8) in Osaka on the under-card of the WBA female Minimumweight title bout between Nana Yoshikawa (4-0, 2) and Anabel Ortiz (16-3, 3).
The Filipino, ranked #5 by the WBC at 115lbs, will be entering the bout on a 5 fight winning streak, consisting of 4 stoppages. That winning run has followed on from a trio of losses in back in 2012-2013. Notably two of those losses, defeats to Toshiyuki Igarashi in 2012 and Hiroyuki Hisataka the following year, both came in Japan and in fact entering this bout Jaro is 0-3 in Japan with the other loss being a 2011 defeat to the then promising Hirofumi Mukai.
Although Jaro is relatively well known, most notably for his upset win over Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, we've got to admit not too much is known internationally about Kawaguchi. The 30 year old Japanese fighter had his best year in 2009 when he was crowned West Japan Rookie of the Year at Super Flyweight. Since then he has struggled to generate much career momentum with regular losses to domestic level competition.
For Kawaguchi this is a chance to score the best win of his career, by far, whilst Jaro will be looking to claim his first win in Japan in what is a relatively compelling undercard bout.
