We are sad to report the passing of former fighter and gym chairman Shigeji Kaneko, 84.
Born in 1931 Kaneko first made a name for himself as a fighter, fighting between 1950 and 1958, running up an excellent 51-10-1 (31) record. During his 61 fight career Kaneko won the OPBF Featherweight title, claiming it in 1953 and holding it until his retirement with 6 defenses. Among those that he faced were the great Flash Elorde, defeating Elorde in 4 bouts, and Sandy Saddler.
Following his career as a fighter Kaneko set up the Kaneko gym, which he opened in 1965. That gym, which still runs today, saw him leading it until passing the reigns to his son, Kentaro Kaneko, in 2014. Sadly in recent years he had been suffering progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) which continued to worsen until his death on January 2nd.
All of our thoughts are with the Kaneko family at this time.
RIP Mr Kaneko
