Second poster released for Shingo Wake Vs Jimmy Paypa, makes clear hint Wake wants Rigondeaux next!
Japanese southpaw Shingo Wake (17-4-2, 10) is less than 3 weeks away from the 5th defense of his OPBF Super Bantamweight title, a bout that will see him take on Filipino challenger Jimmy Paypa (16-2-1, 6). Despite that he's been clear in his intentions to chase WBA "Super" and WBO Super Bantamweight world champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (15-0, 10) and although he's not over-looked Paypa he's been open that he is eager to fight for a world title.
Today Wake posted up an image for a second poster for his bout with Paypa, and this poster has a very clear message at the top. "The road to the Strongest".
Rigondeaux is the man widely regarded as the strongest fighter in the division and for Wake it seems that this bout is the next step on the road to Rigondeaux. In many ways this makes Wake different to every other notable fighter in the division in that he actually wants a fight with the much avoided Cuban "Jackal".
Although Rigondeaux is highly skilled and widely regarded as the clear #1 in the division he has really struggled to secure fights in recent times. This has partly been due to American TV effectively blackballing him for his style and also down to other fighters avoiding him, suggesting he is high-risk and low-reward. This has seen fellow champions, such as Leo Santa Cruz, Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg, all put off fights with the Cuban. Instead it's been down to fighters from the east to challenge the Cuban, in fact 3 of Rigondeaux's last 4 opponents have been Asian including Hisashi Amagasa, who really increased his standing in the sport with his brave effort against Rigondeaux on New Year's Eve.
Incidentally Wake was supposed to be the man in the ring with Rigondeaux at the end of last year though promotional issues and problems with television saw Amagasa getting the chance instead of Wake.
